Methodology

Prices come from HM Land Registry Price Paid Data, the official record of property sales in England and Wales, published under the Open Government Licence. For each town we take a recent sample of transactions and report the average (mean) and the median sold price. The median is less affected by a handful of very high or very low sales, so the two figures together give a fairer picture than either alone. Towns with too few recent transactions to be meaningful are left out.
